Soccer Goalie and Podcaster Ivan Sanchez Breaks Down the World Cup
Toffee regular, Toffee League player, writer and soccer podcaster Ivan Sanchez answered our questions about the World Cup, the future of the Mexico team, what to look for in Liga MX and more. In today's blog, he gives his opinions on how the World Cup went down and what he thinks about Mexico's performance.
Q: What the heck happened to Germany Ivan! Did Neuer come back too soon? You noted in your World Cup preview podcast that he may be back physically, but not have had time to get his judgement and communication with his back line in place. Or, was Neuer the least of Germany’s problems? Was leaving Sane out only a mistake in hindsight?
A: When you have such a polarizing figure like Neuer it was always going to be a complicated situation. Neuer is a goalkeeping freak and in my opinion is in the top five of all time goalkeepers. He’s also the captain of the team and Joachim Low made it very clear that if he brought Neuer it was going to be as a starter. I think when you look back at the matches and the goals that Germany conceded, it’s hard to really point Neuer as the main problem.
There was a major lack of balance in the German team and their backline and especially their center backs were constantly exposed and outnumbered when they were being attacked.
When you watched them it seemed like they did need a player of the qualify of Sane who could take defenders off the dribble and create havoc.. because Sweden, Mexico, and South Korea all looked relatively comfortable defending Germany and were able to keep most of the German attack in front of them.
With Germany, I think in the long run they will be fine. It’s about cycling out some of the players who’ve been there a while and time to get the next core of players in as they start to look at Euros in two years.
