NWHL Viewing Party with Sports Bra PDX at The Toffee Club
Sports Bra PDX are a brand new, Portland based organisation who strive to support, celebrate and promote women and queer people in sports.
Founded by a group of Thorns fans looking for more opportunities to celebrate these often underrepresented athletes, Sports Bra PDX are hosting pop-up events across sports bars in Portland and building a safe environment for their community of like-minded fans.
The Toffee Club is excited to become one of Sports Bra PDX’s home bars, with our first partner event coming up this weekend.
Saturday 12th January 4.30 PM NWHL Minnesota vs Boston - Clubhouse
We sat down with Sports Bra founder, Ally, to find out a bit more about this great organization. You can read the full interview below.
What inspired you to start Sports Bra PDX?
The idea blossomed in 2013 - the inaugural season of the NWSL and our Portland Thorns. I have been a Riveter section season ticket holder from the start. The magic and love that erupts in the north end during Thorns matches inspired me to imagine what that kind of support could look like for more WTF (women, trans, & femme) athletes more often. While I am interested in going out to watch at sports bars, not only do I not often feel welcome or necessarily safe in most of those spaces, they usually are not showing the games and competitions I want to see. So I envisioned a typical sports bar that replaced everything on the screens and memorabilia on the walls with women's, girl's, and queer teams, athletes, and events. Sports Bra wants to support these folks at the professional levels (WNBA, NWSL, NWHL, Olympics, etc.) as well as make space right alongside the pros for development, recreational, intramural, local, and youth leagues.
Our slogan: We Support!
Who else is involved in the running of Sports Bra PDX?
Right now the team is Ally, Kayla, and Cameron. We have also have had some support from Kerri!
How can someone join Sports Bra PDX?
Please email us. We welcome interested teammates. Let us know what position you want to play!
Are there any rules or codes of conduct that members must follow?
Anyone who is supportive of what we are doing is welcome to join us. We strive for Sports Bra to be an inclusive and safer space for supporters to gather and celebrate WTF in all realms of sport! Hateful and oppressive language and actions are not welcome. We invite interested supporters to join us in ongoing conversation about how we uphold this kind of space. It takes practice and teamwork!
Which sporting events are you most excited about for 2019?
Of course the World Cup in France. March madness NCAA basketball. Definitely want to get out to see more Roller Derby. The WNBA season! Really anything we can get our hands on
Tell us more about the memorabilia you collect!
We have a growing collection of memorabilia (scarves, posters, foam finger, cereal boxes w/ athletes on the front, etc.) that we bring to display at each Sports Bra event. We encourage supporters to contribute to our collection anything you're willing to share that represents women, girls, or queer people in sport, including photos of you/your teams that you've played on. We also have a growing library of books that cover a wide range of topics representing and celebrating WTF in sport. Come browse the collection at our next event!
Please join us and Sports Bra this weekend, and be sure to follow them on their Facebook page.
