Argentinian artist Gordopelota's take on the upcoming Boca Juniors vs River Plate game
Sunday, December 9th in our clubhouse.
11:30 AM River Plate v. Boca Juniors
In the run up to Sunday’s final game of the Copa Libertadores - Boca Juniors vs River Plate, we speak to Argentinian muralist, Martin Gordopelota about a piece of work he recently commissioned for soccer media giants Copa90.
The piece illustrates his view of the long-standing and currently hightened rivalry between the two teams of his town of Argentina - Boca Juniors and River Plate.
Gordopelota says: “The main Idea was to show both clubs history through the classic bucket hats that all fans wear. Each club has his own players, trophies, chants, and jokes on the rival that made them what they are, in opposition to the other team. But at the same time, corruption, the connection between barras bravas (gangster hooligans) and club presidents and local politics and police, is exactly the same on both clubs.”
He continues: “One of the main River Plate hats reads ‘look how different we are’. I personally think they are not. This last part (not the difference, but the similarities) is what lead to all this scandal-hysteria that will end up with the copa Libertadores (its name like that because of the Libertators of America like San Martin and Bolivar) being played for the first time in Spain, the land of the conquerors that these libertators where fighting. It;s a beautiful paradox.”
Thank you, Martin, for sharing these beautiful images and insight into your home towns.
We will show the Boca Juniors vs River Plate final game at the Toffee Club this Sunday, 10th December at 11.30 AM. Join us for what is sure to be a passionate and intense game of proper football.
