Join Street Soccer PDX at the Toffee Club and Help Fight Homelessness through Soccer
Street Soccer PDX is ramping up for their annual kickoff party this month and we’re delighted to be their host for the second year in a row.
Street Soccer Portland is a local non-profit using the power of soccer to help people of all ages and backgrounds discover their strengths, take positive steps forward in their lives and connect to social service agencies.
We caught up with Street Soccer PDX’s founder Adam Lewis about their 2018 achievements and what’s in store for 2019.
1. What are you most proud of in terms of Street Soccer PDX's achievements from 2018?
I'm most proud of our players' resilience and the support they offer their teammates. Many juggled stressful life events and still found time to commit to showing up each day and working hard to improve. It's the small breakthroughs--completing a pass, making a friend, scoring a goal--that lead to big life changes like moving into apartment, starting a job or reenrolling in school.
It's hard to put into words, but I'm most proud when one of our players make a positive choice toward accomplishing their goal.
2. How did 2018 differ from previous years, if at all?
This year was full of growth!
We served nearly 350 people at 6 different programming sites, adding 3 new staff coaches and reaching an extremely diverse group of players, some experiencing homelessness and/or spending time in rehabilitation facilities, while others came to Portland has recent immigrants or refugees.
Perhaps the single consistency was the amazing support we received from the Portland community. Regardless of the ask, I'm always struck by Portland's propensity to help.
3. What are you most excited about for 2019?
Our big push in 2019 is to deepen engagement with our current groups, and to intentionally focus on gender equity when launching new programs.
I'm most excited to launch our Women's Homeless World Cup program. This program will create a safe, inclusive space for homeless and low-income women to improve confidence, self-esteem and connect with local social service agencies to provide a pathway toward improved education and employment outcomes. The goal is to staff childcare professionals at every session to create a safe, inclusive space for low-income and homeless mothers.
4. If someone wants to get involved in Street Soccer PDX, how do they find out about their potential and how do they go about getting in touch?
We're always looking for volunteers. The best place to start is by checking out our website and check out the Join the Movement tab or join us for the Kickoff Party on January 17th from 5:30-8 PM at Toffee Club.
Or you can email Adam for more info.
5. We know the bench winner will be announced on the 17th, is there anything else you would like to tell people about the event?
The first Street Soccer skill is 'Show Up' and that's what we're asking of you. The movement to end homelessness with soccer gains momentum with every story, every relationship and every pass of a soccer ball.
Just by showing up and supporting us at this event, you lend your presence and voice to our cause. Hope to see everyone there!
(Not to mention we'll have delicious beer from Coalition Brewing!)
Join us on Thursday 17th January from 5.30 PM to celebrate this fantastic organisation. Learn about the impact Street Soccer PDX had on Portland’s homeless, refugee and at-risk youth communities in 2018 and be inspired by their members, volunteers and board members on how you can get involved in 2019.
