2019 World Cup at the Toffee Club - a Final Word
When we started planning for the 2019 World Cup, our dream was that it would be as successful as the 2018 World Cup. Success to us meant building a similar community throughout the tournament, providing the same experience to the fans and bringing attention to women’s soccer.
In order to make this dream a reality, we made sure that we put in the same effort, same passion and same focus as the 2018 World Cup. Would we be open for every game? YES. Including the super early 4 AM Australia vs Italy? ABSOLUTELY!
We changed our table names to famous female superstars, we spent hours sorting through player stickers to deck out the women’s restroom door and we prepared our team for a busy month ahead. Only one question remained… will they come?
Friends new and old, you could have not been more supportive. We grew to expect the same familiar sleepy faces every morning. We watched you make new friends, we watched you cry and cheer on your favorite teams and players. We saw many of you make the pub your home.
We chanted with the American Outlaws for the USWNT. We cheered on the Lionesses, and celebrated with our Swedish friends when their team won. We rooted for our Thorns and some of you even jumped on Aimee’s bandwagon to cheer on new teams like Italy, Chile, and Argentina.
For the final, you packed the street, the pub and Away Days and you showed everyone that women’s soccer matters in Portland.
Many places will go back to showing the men’s game, so will we. But our promise to you is one we have always considered important. We promise that our support for women’s soccer does not stop here. We promise to hold it to the same level of importance as the men’s game, to continue to show NWSL, USWNT, W League and anything we can get our hands on. We hope that your support doesn’t end here either and you continue to show the women’s game the same passion and support as you did this summer.
